The Full-Time Feather
Leeds United 1 – The Other Side of the Big Hill 1
Elland Road
I'm not entirely sure where to start with this one.
Do we start with Bruno Fernandes? Quite possibly the most intolerable human being to ever pull on a pair of football boots. A bloke so irritating that Colonel Gaddafi would probably have had a bigger fan club.
Or the referee? A man so soft I'm surprised he didn't ask Bruno and Harry Maguire for permission before blowing his whistle.
Or perhaps Dominic Calvert-Lewin? Flowing locks, a bit of muscle, outpowering the behemoth that is Bryan Mbeumo before rifling his shot past a helpless keeper. Hair bouncing, Elland Road rocking. Beautiful.
But no.
Apparently the biggest talking point is one lad calling Sir Alex Ferguson a C-you-next-Tuesday.
Cue talkSPORT. Cue the outrage. Cue the professional pearl-clutchers.
Yes, Fergie was one of the greatest managers ever. Trophies, legacy, blah blah blah. But after years of Fergie Time, I reckon most of us have called him considerably worse, usually in the 97th minute when only three had been added.
It's football. It's rivalry. It's Leeds versus Manchester United.
We've spent years outside the Premier League with all that rivalry bottled up. Did anyone genuinely expect us to politely applaud and exchange Christmas cards?
Give over.
And amongst all this manufactured outrage, we've forgotten there was actually a game.
For all the sideways passing, and my occasional urge to scream JUST GET IT FORWARD, I thought Farke and his men stood up and gave them a proper contest.
Could we have been braver? Absolutely. Quicker? Definitely. But there was fight, belief and a Leeds side that wasn't remotely intimidated.
One-all won't go down as an Elland Road classic, but it reminded us why this fixture matters.
So while the radio stations debate naughty words about a retired manager, I'll remember DCL's finish, the noise, the fight and Bruno Fernandes reminding everyone that talent and being an absolute pain in the backside can coexist.
Leeds United 1. The Other Side of the Big Hill 1.
A point apiece. Absolutely no love lost.
Marching On Together.
